 | 1934-35 Melbourne Centenary
Florin. Some tone, almost full wreath to the rider, Near UNC. Per photos. This
handsome design was the second commemorative florin issued by Australia
and was sold at
one shilling above the face value with the balance going towards the
100 years of Melbourne celebrations. Because money was hard to come by
during the Depression many people would not pay 3 shillings for a 2
shilling coin and
21,000 of the 75,000 minted remained unsold and were melted down. Most
are found in higer grades, EF to UNC, as this coin rarely circulated and
was saved by collectors. Beware of fakes. Only buy from recognized dealers or large coin auctions. | Sold |

 | 1967 Swan or Goose dollar proof. Silver,
38mm, 28.7 grams. Plain edge, near FDC. Proof issue, numerous
hairlines, as most of the proofs were foolishly brushed by the staff
before being boxed!
The
1967 “Goose” $1 is not an official issue, although it does hold an
interesting part in Australia’s coin history. The Swan Pattern dollar
has been nicknamed the “Goose dollar” by collectors. As decimal
currency was to be introduced in 1966, collectors were surprised to
learn that a $1 coin would not be included in the new issues. So, in
1965 the Aust Coin Review ran a competition and the winning entry
submitted to the Aust government. When this coin was rejected by the
authorities, competition organizers decided to have it minted
privately. In 1967 it was engraved & struck by John Pinches of
London. The design, by Andor Meszaros features a swan with Australia
1967 on the obverse and wattle with 100 (cents) printed
on the reverse. On the obverse (swan side) at approx 4 o’clock right
next to the rim are the designers initials. 1500 made in UNC, 750
in proof.
