A selection of  Australian gold Sovereigns and Halves,   Period 1860s to early 1930s.

Sovereigns each weigh .2354 of an ounce of fine
gold.

Gold Sovereigns were minted from 1817 in England and from 1855 in Australia, until 1931. They were and still are, a worldwide currency, able to be negotiated in virtually any country. Much Australian gold was also shipped to England. Here is your chance to buy something historical and worthwhile, that will, unlike many modern gold and mint issues,  always have a reasonable intrinsic and collector value. These make excellent presents.

Payment within Australia:  Money order, cheque, which must clear before coins sent, or direct bank deposit only on these coins please. Definitely NO credit cards or Paypal accepted on these gold coins.

List follows.  British coins listed in BLUE.  Australian coins listed in GREEN.  World coins listed in other colours.

Two gradings, example VF/gVF means the coin is graded both sides, Obverse side (the portrait side) first. With most  sovereigns, particularly Sovereign Shields and Sydney Mints, the Reverse is usually in a higher grade than the Obverse. Gold is a soft metal, so virtually all old gold coins have bag marks or contacts.

Shield & St George Reverses. 1871-1887 period.  Click small

photos to see LARGER photos.

After 1870 Australia began using both  "Shield" types, similar to those issued in Britain from 1838, and "St George" types, a variation on the GB 1817-1820 issue. Australian coins have a S, M or P mintmark, British coins do not, that is the only difference, with the exception of the 1855-1870 Sydney Mint sovereigns, which were a unique local design, the only time that England granted the colonies the right to such a variation on the design of sovereigns.
